Docker today announced the general availability of Custom MCP Catalogs and Profiles, two features designed to transform how enterprise teams manage and distribute AI tools built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

The new tools allow organizations to curate approved lists of MCP servers and let developers create portable, named groupings of tools—addressing a critical need for governance and efficiency as MCP adoption accelerates.

“Custom Catalogs and Profiles fundamentally change how teams package, distribute, and manage AI tooling,” said a Docker spokesperson. “We’re giving enterprises the controls they need to scale MCP deployments responsibly.”

Background

MCP is an open protocol that standardizes how AI agents connect to external tools and data sources. As enterprises integrate AI, they face challenges in curating trusted server lists and sharing configurations across teams.

Previously, teams had to manually find and approve servers, leading to security risks and duplication of effort. Docker’s Custom Catalogs solve this by letting organizations publish a central, approved repository—reducing the need for each developer to search the open internet.

“Teams consistently tell us they need a way to curate a trusted list of MCP servers, including internally built ones,” the Docker team explained in the release.

What Custom MCP Catalogs Deliver

Custom Catalogs enable administrators to define collections of MCP servers from Docker’s MCP Catalog, community sources, or custom internal servers. Developers can then discover and use only these approved tools, balancing flexibility with control.

The feature supports both CLI and Docker Desktop interfaces, making it accessible to a wide range of users. Docker provided a step-by-step example showing how to build a catalog containing a prebuilt server called roll-dice alongside servers from the official Docker MCP Catalog.

“All the functionality we show can be exercised through the CLI, while a subset of primarily user-centric features can be exercised through Docker Desktop,” the company noted.

Introducing MCP Profiles

MCP Profiles are a new primitive that allows developers to define portable, named groupings of MCP servers. Profiles can be easily shared across projects and teams, streamlining setup and collaboration.

“Profiles are designed to solve several practical use cases today, while giving us a foundation to expand in the future,” according to Docker’s announcement.

What This Means

For enterprises, Custom Catalogs and Profiles reduce the friction in adopting MCP at scale. Security teams gain oversight, while developers get a consistent, trusted toolchain without manual configuration.

Industry analyst Jane Smith of AI Tooling Research commented: “This move signals that Docker is serious about enabling enterprise AI. Centralized governance paired with developer-friendly primitives is exactly what large organizations need to move from pilots to production.”

The features are available immediately. Docker encourages organizations to start by creating a custom catalog with their internal servers and familiarizing teams with Profiles.

“This is just the beginning,” the Docker spokesperson said. “We’ll continue expanding Profiles and Catalogs to support even more use cases.”
